News in and around Rippey:

Sent to the Rippey folks – There will be a community come & go bridal shower for Lauren King and Schyler Bardole at the Churdan United Methodist Church Saturday, July 25, from 10:30 am to 12 pm.

Fourth of July visitors in the home of Virgene Morse were Kevin and Delores Blanshan of Waterloo, Kelsey Blanshan of Ames, and Eric Blanshan and Dana Andersen of Littleton, CO. Grandma treated them to one of her fabulous buttermilk pancake breakfasts. Joining them for supper were Diane and Terry Ostendorf, Ben, Micheala and Madelyn of Madrid. A game of baseball and board games filled the night with lots of fun and laughter.

Picnic in the Park: More than 30 people gathered for the first “Party in the Park” at Osborn Park in Rippey sponsored by the Rippey Lions Club. This event was held for community to gather and to celebrate the work done by the Rippey Lions Club and others to improve the park, placing pea gravel around the play equipment, repairing the picnic table, cleaning the memorial stone, and repainting the merry-go-round. Lions Club members who were part of the day included Maralynn and Myron Rinker, Mary and Rick Liebich, Harlan DenBeste, Rachel Sacco, Nancy Burrow, and Dale and Nancy Hanaman. Others Lions Club members who worked on the park project included Keith Devilbiss, John Mills, David Wells and Randy Vodenik.

Many Rippey area folks have been involved in the Greene County Fair, including 4-H members, leaders and parents. Tasty food served at the Clover Café and the nightly barbecues. Dale and Nancy Hanaman prepared and help serve homemade ice cream at the Greene County Historical Society barn on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Chuck Offenburger moderated a presentation on state and national plowing contests including the “Agrarama” held in Greene County in 1966. Featured on the panel were Roger Norgren of Rippey, Steve King, now of Ogden, and Robert Huber of Cedar Falls, son of Laurence Huber state and national plowing champion. Laurence plowed in state and national plowing matches and later worked with Steve and Roger as they developed their plowing skills and they plowed in state, national and world plowing matches.

Hanaman visitors: Alex Bardole of Decatur, GA, and Sydney Bardole of Portland, OR, nephew and niece, of Nancy and Dale Hanaman spent time on “The  Farm.” They enjoyed remembering their many visits when they were younger with Nancy’s parents, Clark and Esther Bardole. Sharon McBlain of Hamden, CT, was also there and returned to her home the following day.

Toni Roberts spent three days in Algona helping her niece and husband, Stacy and Kent Barber, sort and organize household items at the lakeside home of her sister Joyce Macek.  Joyce is currently living in an assisted living facility in Algona and Stacy is readying the lake home to be sold. Wednesday evening Joyce joined the family for supper at the Barber home.  Before returning home on Thursday, Toni had dinner with her sister at the facility. Toni hopes to visit again soon to help her niece with the upcoming sale.

Late Friday evening Phil and Toni drove to the Des Moines Airport in order to pick up their friend Jean Borgeson who was returning from a visit with family in Phoenix. Jean chatted all the way home about the adventures with her grandchildren—this helped to keep everyone awake since it was midnight when they started home. That’s what friends are for!

Jean Borgeson returned home from a two week visit with Blake and Linda Hampton, Sierra, Jayden, and Sophia.  There was plenty of Grandma time alone with the kids while Mom and Dad were at work.  Lots of pictures were taken and some milestones to witness, including the startling fact that Grandma could say “no” and mean it.  Of course that only works if you don’t have a twinkle in your eye and a chuckle in your throat.  I apologize to their sitter.  She will have a few days of undoing the “grandma influence” this week!
